Abstract
Many governments world-wide ordered their populations to stay home and to close non-essential services during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports about an increase in domestic violence were fast to follow. The study on Relationships, Stress and Aggression (RSA)aimed to investigate what the impact of the corona measures on the Belgian population was, and whether an increase in stress, dissatisfaction with relationships and the occurrence of psychological, physical and sexual domestic violence in Belgium could be observed. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to predict sexual victimization in the Belgian population based on the RSA-data from the first month of the COVID-19 lockdown measures by using a prediction model. A stepwise logistic regression was used to construct the model. In a total sample of 3284 respondents that were retained for full analysis, 3% had been sexually victimized in the first four weeks of the Belgian lockdown-measures (March-April 2020), 49% had been victimized prior to the study. More than half showed an increased stress level and 24% had acute stress syndrome. Age, a changed financial situation during the lockdown measures, the satisfaction level of the relationship with the partner, the presence of an acute stress syndrome, the perceived stress level, victimization of psychological violence during the first month of the COVID-19 lockdown and a history of victimization of sexual violence were all significantly associated with victimization of sexual violence. The model has a C-index of 87.2%. Both the model and the individual predictors were significantly associated with victimization of sexual violence (p <0.05) during the first month of the COVID-19 lockdown. Hence, it seems advisable to take these results into account when aiming to prevent and respond to sexual victimization in similar lockdown situations.
